Seeds of Capoeira

Capoeira Roda

SEEDS OF CAPOEIRA PROJECT

The Seeds of Capoeira Project is designed to promote inclusion, citizenship, self-esteem, and the preservation of Afro-Brazilian cultural heritage among children, adolescents, and young people exposed to social vulnerability.

Target Audience

Children, adolescents, and youth aged 6 to 18 from peripheral neighborhoods, facing situations of social vulnerability.

Objectives

  • Promote social inclusion and citizenship education[cite: 8].
  • Value and spread the culture of capoeira as a Brazilian heritage[cite: 8].
  • Develop socio-emotional skills such as discipline, respect, confidence, and solidarity[cite: 8].
  • Boost self-esteem, a sense of belonging, and youth leadership[cite: 8].
  • Create healthy leisure opportunities, keeping students away from socially risky situations[cite: 8].

Justification

The lack of access to culture, sports, and leisure is recurrent in peripheral areas, increasing social vulnerabilities[cite: 8]. Capoeira acts as a bridge for inclusion, cultural resistance, and citizenship development, creating support networks and future perspectives[cite: 8].

Methodology

  • Free weekly capoeira classes (movements, music, singing, instruments, history)[cite: 8].
  • Cultural expression workshops and discussion groups about identity, citizenship, and values[cite: 8].
  • Partnerships with schools, associations, community spaces, and local capoeira masters (Mestres)[cite: 8].
  • Open activities for families and the community: capoeira rodas, performances, and commemorative events[cite: 8].
  • Psychosocial support, guidance, and referral to social services when necessary[cite: 8].

Expected Results

  • Inclusion of 40 to 100 participants per year[cite: 8].
  • Increase in students' self-esteem, discipline, and social integration[cite: 8].
  • Strengthening of family and community bonds through a culture of peace[cite: 8].
  • Reduction in school dropout rates, exposure to violence, and other social risks[cite: 8].
  • Identification and encouragement of new talents in capoeira and Brazilian popular culture[cite: 8].

Evaluation

  • Monitoring attendance and the development of the participants[cite: 8].
  • Conducting satisfaction surveys with students, families, and collaborators[cite: 8].
  • Holding biannual events to present results to the community[cite: 8].

Sustainability

Fundraising through partnerships with companies, government, public notices (editais), and donations[cite: 8]. Engagement of volunteers, including former students[cite: 8]. Possibility of expansion to include people with disabilities and the elderly (capoterapia)[cite: 8]. This project can be adjusted according to the local context, expanding social impact and promoting citizenship and transformation through capoeira[cite: 8].
